Liam
Merriman launches new CD
Legions
of Liam Merriman's fans and friends turned up in Downes
on Wednesday last for the launch of Liam's CD ''Three
Rivers''. ''Muso heads'' from all over the country were
on hand showing the high regard which Liam is held in in
the music industry.
Well known as a singer/songwriter and acoustic
guitarist, Liam has built a fine reputation over many
years of playing the live circuit as a solo performer
and with a band.
His songs, crafted with creative melodies and poetic
lyrics have been heard on local radio up and down the
country as well as live slots on RTE and BBC radio and
TV.
Liam who sings with both ease and energy represented
Ireland at the Pan Celtic International Song Contest,
having been commissioned by RTE to write and perform a
song as gaeilge for the event. He released two singles
while with Polygram Records in the 1980's ''What A Day''
and ''The Love In Your Eyes''. His song ''Echoes'' was
also included on RTE's ''Best of Sounds Promising'' LP
from the radio series presented by Shay Healy.
''Three Rivers'', his first album of ten original songs
was produced by Greg Boland and is an entirely
independent and self-financed release.
Speaking of the title of the CD Liam explains ''most of
the album was recorded in a cottage on the estuary,
between Woodstown and Dunmore East, where the three
rivers, the Suir, the Barrow and the Nore combine their
energy and push out into the sea.''
''There are 'river' references in some of the tracks
echoing the influence of the local river and landscape
in my writing. For example, the final track on the album
'Sail the River Home' paints a romantic image of the
young fisherman sailing back up the river in the evening
after the day's fishing.'' While the overall style of
the album is folk based, there are a number of songs
where eclectic influences become apparent .We tended to
go with the song rather than just rein it back into a
folk arrangement.
A wealth of local musical talent has added value to the
recording. ''In the "City of Music" it is not
difficult to find musicians to work with who can compete
with the best of session musicians. Michael Burke
contributes beautiful Spanish guitar work on a number of
tracks ably assisted by the Double Bass playing of Keith
MacDonald. Vocalists Jane O'Brien-Moran and Bobbie Carey
lend their voices in harmony and backing vocals. African
Drums and percussion are played by Marc Merriman (my
son) and Dave Keane. Producer Greg Boland plays electric
guitar and Tommy Moore accompanies on electric bass.''
The artwork on the cover and in the lyric booklet is by
photographic artist Christine Simpson from Dunnore East.
Anastasia Somers from Co. Wexford did the graphic layout
and design.
Guitarist Greg
Boland, who produced the album, is one of
Irelands most experienced and respected touring and
recording musicians. A founding member of Scullion, he
has played with many bands and artistes such as Moving
Hearts, Paul Brady, Bono, Naked Lunch, Christy Moore,
Carole King, Donal Lunny, Leo Sayer, Sinead O'Connor and
John Martyn to name but a few.
The entire project was self-financed. CDs are available
from local shops, at gigs, or purchased online above
